Most students find it difficult to cite their papers. It is a prime reason for students to opt for APA reference generator for citations. As APA is one of the most common referencing styles used by universities across the world, it is necessary for both students and professionals to excel in this citation style. Although, there are several rules for citing different types of documents, one can master the art through constant practice.
Individuals can always get citation generators for different styles like the Harvard citation style. In this article, the process of writing citations for various types of documents in the APA style will be discussed.
Before beginning, it is necessary to know that there are two types of citations in any document:
i. In
In-text citation using APA style
In order to create an in-text citation in the APA style, one needs to follow the below mentioned instruction:
Following the ‘author/date’ system, one needs to include the surname of the author and the publication year. The data must be given inside two parentheses, and there will be a comma between the surname and the date. This will be followed for all types of texts including journals, books, web sources, etc. For example, if lines from Wordsworth’s ‘The Solitary Reaper’ from a book published in 1910 are to be referenced using in-text citation, it should go as follows:
For two authors, the surnames of the authors should be connected by ‘&’ and followed by a comma and year of publication.
For example, to cite a piece written by two authors, BJ Soden, and IM Held, and published in 2006, the in-text citation will go as follows:
If a publication has three to five authors, then, the citation will be:
In case of more than five authors, the first author’s surname should be used. This will be followed by ‘et al.’ within the parentheses. An example would be:
If there is no author, the title of the text or the first word/two words should be used. In case of reports or books, the title is italicised; in case of articles, web pages, the title is used within “quotation marks”.
Example for this will go like:
In-text citations can come after the direct quote or line which has been taken from another text, or in between the line. The examples are given below:
“My Dear Poole, - I could inform the dullest author how he might write an interesting book.” (Coleridge, 2018).
Now that you know all about in-text citations, you should learn about creating the referencing list.
